Our first day will be jam-packed with many famous sightseeing hotspots, starting in the heart of Cape Town at the top of Signal Hill. Situated beneath Lions Head this spot offers a glorious view over the City. We proceed from there, hugging the beautiful coastline where the route takes us past the famous Twelve Apostles on the Atlantic side of Table Mountain, all the way to Hout Bay. We continue and follow the world famous Chapman’s Peak Drive, which winds above the near-vertical face of the mountain to the top. We take a break at this point to take in the iconic view. From here the route keeps us clinging to the coastline as we make our way past Misty Cliffs to the Cape Point Nature Reserve for lunch. Within the Reserve, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are must see viewing stops for all visitors to South Africa. After lunch we ride along the False Bay coastline through various small towns including Simonstown, home to the South African Navy, Kalk Bay, and Muizenberg, which is a favourite surf spot. We continue until we arrive at our luxury overnight accommodation in Strand.
AStarting with a leisurely cruise along the beachfront road in Strand, we continue to make our way to the picturesque harbour town Gordons Bay and onto the Clarence Drive Mountain Pass. Clarence Drive is one of the most spectacular routes the Cape Peninsula has to offer. It follows the False Bay coast line, and runs between the ocean on the one side and the foothills of the Southern extension of the Hottentots Holland Mountains on the other. The route undulates along the mountainside, at times almost down to where the waves crash onto the shore and then rises above the water’s edge, allowing for opportunities to stop at any of the numerous viewing sites to enjoy the beautiful views of False Bay. Our lunch stop is in the beautiful coastal town of Hermanus, famous for being a favourite getaway spot for Capetonians, as well as for whale watching, voted by the WWF as being one the 12 best whale watching spots in the world. Southern Right whales can be seen during the mating season which is between July and November. An outstanding dinner and excellent overnight accommodation brings a memorable day to a close.
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, we meander through small fishing villages towards the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. Notorious for a number of shipwrecks, we will also visit the lighthouse and museum to find out more about the history of this sight. After refreshments and photos we proceed to move onto the back roads in the area and head inland towards the town of Swellendam, known for its well preserved Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings. Once again we are treated to true South African hospitality at our luxury accommodation.
We start our final day by making our way towards Robertson, a quaint little town situated in the shadow of the majestic Langeberg mountains and best known for producing magnificent wines. After enjoying the morning’s scenic ride and a hearty lunch, we continue our journey, passing through numerous lush valleys before descending the truly stunning Franschhoek mountain pass, a must see for any traveller to the Western Cape, and a must ride for any motor cyclist in the area. After a refreshments stop at one of the many sidewalk cafes in Franschhoek, we make our way back to Cape Town following the scenic, winding roads that curve through the Cape Winelands.

I’ve just completed a four day tour with Africa Twin Adventures on their Whale and Wine route and can report that i am exceptionally happy with my choice of tour operator in respect of what was offered in their website pertaining to this tour.
The first two days along the stunningly beautiful coastline via twisty roads astride their AT motorcycles followed by another two days through farmlands and mountain passes was a perfect combination of varied scenery and comfortable daily distances covered. I couldn’t fault the accommodation and quality of meals at the same venues. Having read much about the recent launch of Honda’s new Africa Twins it was especially pleasing to have experienced this tour on these immaculately prepared machines. I shall be returning to undertake the Garden Route Tour with Africa Twin Adventures and can eagerly recommend them to anyone wishing to experience a motorcycle tour run and led by a passionate and knowledgeable owner/operator.
