Garden route

The tour offers eight days of riding through an area best described as motorcycle adventure touring heaven. The region is known as the Garden Route and for good reason too. It boasts a variety of stunning experiences including amazing scenery, winding roads, lagoons, a beautiful coastline and verdant, ecologically diverse vegetation ranging from natural forests, vineyards and what is locally referred to as the Klein Karoo landscape. The region is known for its mild climate throughout the year, which makes it a favourite holiday destination for locals as well as international visitors all year round.

The tour includes accommodation at a game farm which offers nature drives, the Cango Caves, the Knysna Forest, the southernmost tip of Africa, together with no less than 22 spectacular mountain passes, are all included in this trip. All accommodation and meals are carefully selected to ensure the ultimate in luxury and cuisine.

There is indeed a lot to experience over the eight day tour, where each day’s ride is carefully planned to allow enough time for completing the distance comfortably while stopping and visiting the many attractions along the route. Your tour guide grew up and spent many years living in this area. His passion, experience and local knowledge will guarantee this to be a trip you will never forget.

I will collect you from your hotel in Cape Town in my vehicle and bring you through to my base at our farm near Robertson. We will leave from here on the bikes, and after a short stretch of dirt we will head to the Du Toitskloof mountain pass. This beautiful paved pass has magnificent views towards Cape Town and is a great road for motorcycles. After descending Du Toits Kloof we take the back roads to the small town of Wellington, before ascending the spectacular Bainskloof Mountain pass. Having been resurfaced recently, this paved mountain pass which is 28km (17mi) long has 205 corners of motorcycling heaven.

From there we then follow the twisty roads all the way to the outskirts of Robertson and settle in at our luxury lodgings where we will prepare a traditional South African braai( Barbeque)

After breakfast we saddle up and take a leisurely ride down the legendary Route 62, stopping at small country towns along the way to sample local cuisine and enjoy the scenery. Our overnight stop is the small hamlet of Calitzdorp, also referred to as the Port (sweet wine) capital of South Africa. We book into our lodgings and enjoy the sun set over the Klein Karoo and local hospitality.

After breakfast we saddle up and take a leisurely ride down the legendary Route 62. Part of our route will be the spectacular Tredou Pass, one of my favourite paved mountain passes to ride on a bike.

Stop

The day starts with a ride through the twisting paved road through Meirings Poort. This road crosses the river 25 times in the distance of 25km (15mi) as it twists its way through the gorge in the mountains. We will leave the hot and dry area of the Little karoo, heading towards the coast. Descending Outeniqua Pass just before the town of George the vegetation becomes green and forest like, the reason this area is called the Garden Route.

We will stop for lunch in Wilderness, where we will have stunning views of the beach and ocean.

After lunch we will twist our way along the coastal road through Sedgefield, and make our way to the beautiful coastal town of Knysna and our hotel on Thesen Island

This will be the shortest day in the saddle on this trip, however we have many fantastic roads to choose from.

Our destination will be Botlierskop Private Game Reserve, undoubtedly one of the top game reserves in the Western Cape. We round the day off with a two hour game drive, where you are sure to see all of the big five.

After a late breakfast we say goodbye to Botlierskop start heading back in the direction of Cape Town. We stay on the paved roads and pass through numerous small towns before arriving at the picturesque small town of Swellendam. After booking in at our luxury lodgings, a great meal will round off another memorable day.

After a hearty breakfast we head for the coast again and make our way to the southernmost tip of Africa, Cape Agulhas. Notorious for its shipwrecks, we can visit the lighthouse and museum. After the obligatory photos we take all the back roads and head to Hermanus. This is a favourite holiday destination for many South Africans and international guests, best known for its whale watching season.

This will be our last day on the bikes, but no less enjoyable. After leaving Hermanus we follow the coastal road through Betty’s Bay and head to Clarence Drive.

Known as one of the most Scenic drives in the Cape Peninsula, this road is motorcycling heaven. The road undulates along the mountainside, at times almost down to the level of the waves and at others rising above the water’s edge, allowing one the opportunity to stop at any of the numerous viewing sites to enjoy the beautiful view of False Bay.

We will then cross Sir lowry’s pass and head back to our warehouse to drop off the bikes, before I take you back to your hotel in Cape Town, rounding off a fantastic trip

5/5

Being a keen adventure rider and having never ridden more than 5 days on the trot, I thought i might be biting off more than i could chew when booking for this package but can most happily state that the mix of varying terrain coupled with manageable daily distances resulted in me grinning from ear to ear at the end of each days riding and especially at the end of the tour. As described in the tour overview Gavin`s “passion, experience and local knowledge” absolutely guaranteed that this trip will never be forgotten. Nothing was too much trouble for Gavin and he was the most charming host who clearly lives his passion for riding in the great outdoors that South Africa has to offer. His choice of lunch stop establishments and overnight accommodation was of the highest quality resulting in the perfect end to each days riding. It was a particular highlight being able to undertake this tour on Honda`s new Africa Twin. All of the bikes in the tour group were Africa Twins and were immaculately prepared and didn’t miss a beat the entire trip.
Full marks to Gavin for an exceptional experience.
